Zurich has built the kind of world-class reputation few destinations anywhere in the world can come close to. It’s not only one of the most efficient and safe cities in Europe, but also quite astonishingly beautiful. And of course, as the unofficial “portal to the alps” you just know there is some excellent skiing to be had in the surrounding areas.

So with this in mind, here’s a look at five of the very best you can get to with ease:

Beckenried

On an average day you won’t need more than an hour or so to get to Beckenried, but when  you arrive you’ll feel like you’ve headed somewhere much farther from the city. There’s a total of 14 lifts in operation which have the potential to carry over 10,000 skiers every hour. There’s upward of 40km of slopes to choose from. Even if heading here straight from the airport, at least three of the region’s busiest are less than two hours away.

Flumserberg

Slightly busier than the above and still coming in at an hour’s drive or less, Flumserberg has a total of 17 lifts in operation and reaches as high as 2,200m. There’s also the added bonus of cross-country tails totalling upwards of 20km around the same resort.

Oberiberg – Ybrig

Zurich city centre lies around 70 minutes from the resort of Oberiberg – Ybrig, while most major airports can be reached in less than two hours. Always a favourite among those in the know, Oberiberg – Ybrig boasts a solid 13 ski lifts and over 30km of trails for cross-country skiing at its finest. And of course, the 50km of pistes don’t exactly disappoint – neither do the renowned local dining and relaxation opportunities.
