Five Unmissable French Alps Hotels
How much importance a skier puts in their choice of hotels when hitting the French Alps of course differs from person to person. However, there’s little denying the fact that there’s really nothing quite like returning home after a day on the slopes to a truly inspiring and downright intoxicating residence that’s clearly been built for more than just functionality.
Of course, there’s plenty to be said for the mainstay built-for-purpose tower blocks and the likes of the busiest resorts, but once you try something truly remarkable it’s very difficult to go back. So with this in mind, here’s a look at just five examples of the most sublime hotels to be found anywhere in the French Alps that are definitely worth a look next time around:
La Plagne, Hotel Carlina
Belle Plagne is already one of the most stunning corners of the French Alps, which means that no matter where you stay you can’t go far wrong. However, Hotel Carlina is more than a cut above the rest in every way. It houses just 47 rooms in total, which helps to retain a hugely personal and intimate feel – it’s a bit like being in a classic chalet, but in a very good way. The rooms are spacious, the atmosphere is as warm as the welcome of the staff and the family rooms offer plenty of private space for parents and children alike.
Val Thorens, Altapura
If you were to take everything you think you know about five-star hotels and summarily throw it right out of the window, you’d be on your way to understanding the concept of Altapura in Val Thorens. It doesn’t follow the usual standards and nor is it cluttered with superfluous junk – it’s instead a purpose-built mecca of modernism and refinement where more time and attention is focused on fabulous function than surface form. It feels like home and the staff’s uniform of woolly jumpers really do top of the warm and cosy ambience.
Courchevel, Hotel St Louis
Here’s a hotel that delivers just as much in convenience stakes as it does comfort and service. Directly across from the Bellecôte piste, in Courchevel, the best skiing in the whole area is literally right on your doorstep. All amenities are on offer in spades and the attentive staff have perfected the art of never crossing the line into being intrusive while at the same time catering to your every whim – it’s really impressive and commendable stuff.
Courchevel, Le Portetta
Sticking with the same resort, Le Portetta is another example of a residence where location really is its key draw. It’s located in Belvedere which is about as tranquil as it gets, though at the same time offers ski-in and out access to the hundreds of kilometres of runs just a stone’s throw away. 39 rooms are decorated with cosy comfort in mind while service standards are world class.
La Clusaz, Au Coeur du Village
And finally, there really aren’t too many places in the whole of the French Alps that manage to seamlessly blend traditional charm and simplicity with five-star standards. One shining example to the contrary though is Au Coeur du Village, which is every bit as decadent as it is family friendly and every bit as stylish as it is laid back and informal.
