Pre-Season Ski Fitness Training To Maximise Your Time On The Slopes

The early skiing session is about to begin and, from my past experience, I’ve learned that to be able to enjoy skiing, you need to work a certain set of muscles that you didn’t even know to have, until the next day when they all start aching! For those of you planning on skiing this year, here are some valuable tips to help you prepare your body for the risks of this sport. These exercises are designed to help strengthen the muscles used the most during skiing – legs, abs, back and arms. These exercises will also develop your balance, core strength and stability all of which are vital for skiing. This workout could be combined with your usual workout sessions too.

Be Prepared

Skiing is fun on the run; however we know that this fun time is limited to only when it snows during certain times of the year. We can’t practice all the year for this sport and this can be dangerous if we don’t have enough consistency to keep our bodies conditioned for it. So, to avoid slope injuries, and the misery that follows with them, we should all take some time beforehand to prepare our bodies for this awesome experience. If you already exercise, you may need to tweak your workouts to make them more effective. To help you get the most out of those expensive lift tickets, you’ll need plenty of cardio endurance. For most of us, ski enthusiasts who want to hit the slopes early and plan on skiing all day, it’s pertinent to realize that our bodies have to be conditioned for this well in advance. When we don’t prepare ourselves for the endurance needed on the slopes there is a high risk of injuries and accidents.

Focus On The Relevant Muscle Groups

Skiing is a great exercise since it uses all of your muscle groups. However, we know that some muscles are used more than others and those are the ones you want to concentrate on when it comes to your strength workouts. While working out, you need to focus on the following muscles:

  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings
  • Glutes
  • Inner and Outer Thighs
  • Calves.
  • Abs and Back
